Hurley BH Ranch was started in 1960 by Bob Hurley with the ambition to breed registered Quarter Horses that had the mind and the athleticism to become champions both in the rodeo arena and as working cow horses. In the beginning, the ranch covered approximately 5000 acres with no facilities and owned one stallion and a few mares. Now the 5000 acres house a covered arena, an outdoor arena, two barns with numerous stalls, approximately 500 head of longhorn cattle and 230 head of registered Quarter Horses. Hurley BH Ranch has grown due to good management and total family involvement by Bob’s children, Bobby, Libby and Fenton. Plans for the future stem from the original goal that the ranch was built upon: To continue to produce quality Quarter Horses that have the ability and the desire to carry their rider to a World Championship. In 1965 Dale Meek was brought aboard as the ranch manager and has overseen our training program from starting colts to finished roping horses. For years Dale has been recognized as one of the better ropers and rope horse trainers in the business having trained and ridden some of the best calf and team roping horses in the country. Saulo Garcia started working with us in the Summer of 1997 and has since broke, ridden and roped off of several hundred colts at the ranch. Saulo heads and heels at both local and US Team Ropings. We believe he is a super all-around cowboy and a great asset. In the fall of 2002, Bobby Hurley came back home after a successful rodeo career. Having won PRCA World Championships in 1993 & 1995 as well as 15 appearances at the NFR. He is helping in all facets of the ranch. David Little has since joined the ranch’s management team as a market and feed analyst. His experience managing co-ops, along with his in-depth knowledge of medicines, is a definite plus in the day-to-day running of the ranch. When selecting bloodlines, Hurley BH Ranch focused on the foundation bloodlines of the American Quarter Horse. The bloodlines that were dominate in the breeding program were Leo, Joe Moore and Oklahoma Star. Hancock breeding was later incorporated. The foundation sire of Hurley BH Ranch was Butler Joe (AQHA # 0147146) also known as Buster. Buster was purchased as a two-year-old in 1962. This sorrel stallion’s sire was Joe Norfleet, and his dam was Hanna Blair. Purchased because of his conformation and his mind, Buster proved to pass these traits on to his offspring producing horses that won in the rodeo arena, and were good ranch horses as well. Hurley BH Ranch’s brood mares of today were raised on the ranch, and all replacements are chosen from each year’s foal crop. Mares are trained for performance in arena events. With their bloodlines, conformation and disposition, they also make good ranch horses. Stallions born on the ranch are ridden at an early age to determine their disposition and ability. Once determined if they fit the criteria of the ranch’s breeding program, the stallions will be used mainly for breeding purposes with some use as performance horses. The geldings are further finished out for performance in the rodeo arena and work as ranch horses. Hurley BH Ranch horses have carried numerous riders to many winnings. Such riders to mention are Bobby Hurley, Libby Hurley - Fogg, Dale Meek, Mike Meek, Michala Meek - Garrison and Wayne Dunn. The following are a few of the titles they have achieved upon horses wearing the BH brand: Performance ROM’s American Quarter Horse Congress Champion - Heeling PRCA Heading Horse of the Year High School Rodeo All Around Cowboy High School Rodeo All Around Cowgirl - 4 years 15 Nationals Finals Rodeo Qualifications - Team Roping, Heading 1993 PRCA World Championship - Team Roping, Heading 1995 PRCA World Championship - Team Roping, Heading Arkansas Rodeo Association All Around Cowboy Arkansas Rodeo Association Championships - Team Roping, Heading & Heeling International Finals Rodeo - 3rd in Average, Team Roping Miss Rodeo Arkansas Miss Rodeo America - 1st Runner Up USTRC Championships - Team Roping, Heading George Strait Roping Champion - Team Roping, Heading BFI Roping Champion - Team Roping, Heading 4 - State Barrel Racing Association Novice Winner WPRA - Barrel Racing Bob Hurley realized the importance of a quality bred horse that had a good mind, good cow sense, and the size and structure to achieve whatever is asked of it when he started Hurley BH Ranch. With a son that professionally team ropes, a daughter who barrel races, and grandchildren who enjoy horses, good mounts are a necessity to excel when performing. Over the years, only the American Quarter Horse has matched up to our expectations and continues to do so. By producing quality Longhorn roping cattle and breeding Quarter Horses that have the disposition and ability to excel in the performance arena, Hurley BH Ranch has helped to pave the path for team roping in Arkansas as well as the United States. Our horses began making a contribution to the team roping industry in California and other western states during the 1970's. As team roping grew, many of our horses found their way to the East Coast and are now an influence across the country. With the contribution of quality to the rodeo arena with our Quarter Horses and Longhorn cattle and our continued support of the local equine community, we continue to strive to build upon the positive image already provided by the American Quarter Horse.
